Frequently Asked Questions

What financial incentives are there for me to install a grid intertie solar electric system at my home or business?

Please see the incentives page for more details.

Where would the PV panels be installed?

The PVs may be mounted in a variety of configurations depending on the pitch of your roof and the direction it faces. It can make a difference how old it is and whether it's composition, wood or metal. Whether they are mounted on the roof or on the ground or on a pole, shading and the portion of the day this location's "solar window" is open are critical. For ground mounted PVs, see an example here. For roof mounted PVs, see an example here.

What other components are there in a grid intertie system?

Yes, other major system components are the inverter(s), a DC disconnect switch for the panels, and a P.G.&E. approved AC disconnect switch. All systems have some kind of method (racking) to secure the PVs which varies with the installation needs. Some systems may require one or two other small components.

How long will it take to payback my solar electric system?

This will vary on things like:
  1. The current CEC rebate level
  2. What the rate schedule is on your electric bill
  3. If you do choose to use time-of-use metering, your ability to restrict your power useage away from the noon to 6PM period is vital.
  4. Whether you're a business or this is for your home. Commercial payback can be shorter than residential.
  5. Finally, an answer. Paybacks range from 4 to 12 years.

How long will it take to feel like I've made the right decision to go solar?

The instant you see your electric meter start spinning backwards.

Do I need to get a permit for a grid intertie installation?

Yes, though one of the many services we offer during the completion of your solar electric system is to obtain this permit and achieve the appropriate sign-offs.

Do I need to be technical to own and operate a PV system on my home or business?

Not at all. We take care of the details for you. Once installed, the system runs itself, and ordinarily requires no maintenance other than washing off the solar panels with a garden hose IF they ever do get very dusty. The electrical components are rugged, silent and reliable, and require no user input. All components and installation techniques will meet or exceed national (UL and NEC) standards.
